Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a rather new project country for DSIK and the latest addition to the project “Transformation to a sustainable, resilient agricultural system and towards a social-ecological financial system” (short Sustainable Agricultural and Financial System). With no prior activity here, initial fact finding started in early 2024 and the activities began in May 2025.
For its initial activities DSIK and its partners is looking into ways one of the largest and oldest microfinance markets can address the ‘missing middle’ by increasing lending to the SME sector. Further research aims to determine how deposit collection can help Institutions to refinance while also increasingly providing an essential financial service to the target population. Finally, we are strengthening partner institutions by advising on internal processes and improving training procedures.
Our Partners are Shakti Foundation for Disadvantages Women and BASA Foundation, two NGOs and Microfinance providers as well as Co-operative Credit Union League of Bangladesh (CCULB).
