Bhutan

The German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation is supporting the RENEW Microfinance Pvt. Ltd. in professionalizing its microfinance activities.

The project started in 2011 on a grassroot level. After 10 years RENEW MFI is firmly established within Bhutan’s financial sector. With more than 25,000 clients and covering 50% of the country, it reached financial and institutional sustainability. Sparkassenstiftung and RENEW MFI developed a business model, following the strategy “We go, where it hurts”, providing financial literacy, products and services to the poorest people in very remote areas, which brings success for the MFI, benefits the target group and thus, the whole society (win-win-situation).

In 2019 the German Sparkassenstiftung started the Project: Rural Development (PRuDent). The Project is focused on the agricultural sector and rural households. Together with RENEW MFI we improve the supply of financial services for farmers and teaching them business literacy.

Currently German Sparkassenstiftung in Bhutan focusses on:

- Digitization

- Green Finance

- MSME-Finance

- Business Literacy for farmers

- Improving marketing opportunities for rural farmers
